Sidney Sherman By Katie B. Sidney Sherman, born on June 23rd, 1805, was one of 10 children. His two parents had left young Sherman orphaned, at the age of 12. Sidney got a job as a clerk at a store somewhere in Boston. He worked there for a while, and then went to the sea. He settled in New York, and then drifted to the Ohio valley in 1831. He united with a company in Cincinnati for the purpose of establishing extensive factories in Newport. His brother, Dana Sherman, bought land in Newport in 1832 Sherman became a Texan General and Key Leader in the Texas Revolution. The Texas army assembled the Newport rifles into its second Regiment. They elected Sherman to be their commander in 1836. Texas independence was doomed when Santa Anna moved his army of 1400 against Sherman’s 800. On April 21, Houston attacked his enemies’ camp place. Sherman stayed in Texas and got elected as a Major General of the Republic. Sherman took lead in organizing the first railroad in Texas and served as a general of the Texas state troops during the Civil War, in which Union forces destroyed his property.
